You can’t help but pick one or two of Bombaim’s many kaftans as you walk through its 1,000-square-foot space in Kolkata, for its so airy and chic that time simply slips away from the shopper.

Shopping in the Wilderness

The floor-to-ceiling windows with black frames are very becoming for the store and its surrounding ambience. They almost lend an illusion of shopping in the wilderness in the heart of the populous city. The black, beige, yellow and gold colour palette of the space quite smartly cut across its sharp, neat lines—adding warmth to an otherwise crisp design atmosphere. Back-illuminated paintings by Tilla.in on the white walls of the space go well with all the flowing curated collections of Bombaim throughout the year.

Context and Culture

Renovated by Animesh Nayak of interior design firm ‘Open to Sky’ in the ground floor of a heritage building in Circus Avenue, Kolkata — Bombaim has a modern sensibility with its roots firmly in place. This sings the tune of the decade-old brand’s fashion, jewellery, and design that—like the space—speak of context, culture and history.

Envisioned with a brand-new design philosophy with ideas from owner Richa Kanoi and designer Jeffrey Chen, Bombaim’s interiors have details to note in every corner. The unified concrete flooring with brass scallop-shaped patterns remain in contrast with the starburst ceiling pattern in brass Garuda.

A slim brass skirting illuminate to create a floating illusion. The frameless glass fitted into the full-height arched openings are fronted with Parisian-style metal grilles so they can be opened, letting the space engage, or simply remain in solitude. This is one pitstop we are sure to make again in Kolkata.
